How To Draw A Pencil In Illustrator

Read Time: vii mins Languages:

In the post-obit tutorial, I'll show you how to create a the base shapes to create a pencil. We'll continue to add together depth to the pencil and add some finishing touches with the help of some custom brushes. So let's begin!

Footstep ane

Using the Ellipse Tool (L), describe a green vertical ellipse.

Copy it and Paste in Dorsum (Control + C then Command + B), motion it to the right.

Stride 2

Grab the Lasso Tool (Q), and select the ballast points of both ellipses closest to each other. See the image below for reference.

Press the Delete push button on your keyboard.

So become to Object > Path > Bring together (Command + J) twice.

Step 3

Swap Fill up and Stroke by pressing Shift + X on the keyboard.

Go to Object > Transform > Rotate and achieve the result shown in the helpful diagram beneath. Proper noun the Rotation Bending value (indicated with an pointer in the diagram below) the "Main Bending."

Step 4

Draw a blue path shown below past using the aforementioned technique described above.

Fill this path with an angled linear gradient.

Pace five

Illustrate the following greenish path shown below.

Use the same technique in guild to create the end parts of the pencil.

The full pencil is shown below. You should receive something similar that.

Step vi

Select now the eraser of the pencil, Copy and Paste in Front (Command + C then Command + F).

Fill the copy with an angled linear gradient shown below...

...get to the Transparency panel, and alter the Blending Mode of the copy to Multiply as shown.

Step vii

Select now the main green office of the pencil, Copy and Paste in Forepart (Command + C so Command + F).

Make full the copy with an angled linear gradient shown below...

...go to the Transparency panel, and alter the Blending Mode of the re-create to Luminosity as shown.

Decrease the Opacity of the path.

Step 8

Permit'south modify the stop of the pencil.

Convert it to the following view...

...by using the next mesh. Do it by yourself (without assistance), if you know how to achieve this result. Only if not, proceed to read the next steps of the tutorial.

Footstep nine

Beginning, illustrate a rectangular path (shown with semitransparent one for your convenience in the image below) over the pencil as shown...

...and fill up information technology with an angled linear gradient.

Stride ten

The pencil is non illustrated in the next images for your convenience in order to bear witness the necessary mesh cosmos. So, yous accept the next rectangular path.

Go to Object > Aggrandize and convert information technology to Gradient Mesh.

You will attain the next result.

Stride 11

Take the Lasso Tool (Q) and select all the lower mesh nodes.

Go to Object > Transform > Calibration and set the scaling value to 0. Run into the motion picture below.

Step 12

Go to Edit > Preferences > General (Command + One thousand), and set the Constrain Bending to the "Main Bending."

Select the upper mesh nodes...

...get to Object > Transform > Scale again and set the horizontal not-uniform scaling value to 0 in guild to subtract the mesh handles. You lot should achieve the next effect. Run across the picture below.

The vertical scaling value should be fitted and then as to place the mesh over the pencil finish.

Stride xiii

Select the green end office of the pencil, Re-create and Paste in Front (Command + C and then Command + F).

Select both: this copy and the mesh itself, and become to Object > Clipping Mask > Make (Command + seven).

Step 14

Change the Blending Mode to Color Burn in the Transparency panel and alter the Opacity of it as shown below.

Do the same with the side by side shown path. Up to this signal in the tutorial yous already know how to reach this without aid.

Step 15

In order to continue the creating of a pencil model, we will need to create Art Brushes for the shading. Using the Ellipse Tool (L), draw an elongated elliptical path filled with black.

Copy and Paste in Forepart (Command + C so Control + F). Go to Object > Transform > Scale and decrease the ellipse copy twice every bit pocket-sized. In other words, gear up the percent to l%.

Change the Opacity of the largest ellipse to 0%.

Go to Object > Blend > Blend Options and set the values in the dialog box every bit shown.

Select both ellipses and become to Object > Blend > Make (Control + Alt + B).

Pace xvi

Drag and drop this alloy into the Brushes panel, and cull the Art Brush option in the opened dialog box.

Specify the options for the castor in the second dialog box. Proper name this castor "Black castor". Alter the Colorization Method of it to Hue Shift.

Step 17

Open the Brushes panel and click there the "New Brush" button. Choose the Bristle Brush option in the opened dialog box.

Specify the options for the brush in the 2nd dialog box. Name this castor "Bristle Brush 1".

Step 18

Using the Pen Tool (P), modify the Stroke color to blackness, and the Filling color to None, and depict a usual horizontal line. Meet the image below.

Go to Object > Expand, and then go to Object > Ungroup.

Step 19

Get to Effect > Distort & Transform > Roughen. Specify the options for the path in the dialog box.

Get to Object > Expand Advent.

Footstep 20

Go to Object > Transform > Scale and subtract the vertical scaling to about twenty%. You should accomplish the next picture.

Drag and drop this blend into the Brushes console, and choose the Art Castor option in the opened dialog box. Specify the options for the castor in the second dialog box. Name this castor "Pencil brush". Alter the Colorization Method of information technology to Hue Shift.

Step 21

How to illustrate notches over the metallic part of the pencil?

Commencement, grab the Pen Tool (P) and describe a shown path. Apply the "Black brush" to it every bit it is shown in the helpful diagram below.

Practice the same with the next shown path. Utilize the "Black brush" to it equally well, but now change the Stroke color to white. Follow the helpful image below.

Subtract the Opacities of both paths.

Footstep 22

Copy both paths, and Paste them in Front (Command + C then Command + F). Decrease the Stroke Weights of them, and move information technology slightly in order to make a notch more contrasting.

Illustrate every bit many notches as you want.

Step 23

Apply the "Blackness brush" to the side by side shown paths in lodge to emphasize on the border of the metal function of the pencil.

Footstep 24

Accept the Pen Tool (P) once more and draw two paths as y'all tin can see them in the motion-picture show beneath.

Go to Object > Blend > Blend Options, and set the Spacing to Specified steps, and the number of steps to most 25.

Become to Object > Blend > Make (Command + Alt + B).

Step 25

Crop this alloy past using the corresponding Clipping Mask shown in the film beneath (Command + 7).

Select the blend and go to Object > Expand.

Then apply the "Bristle Brush 1" to the paths. Modify the Stroke color to brown, and decrease the Stroke Weight if necessary. See the image below for reference.

Footstep 26

Draw the adjacent three paths to which the "Black brush" (with black and white Stroke color) is applied. Of class, they should be cropped with a Clipping Mask too.

Decrease the opacities of paths to which the "Black brush" with white Stroke colour is practical. See the prototype below.

Change the Blending Fashion of all the paths to Overlay in the Transparency panel.

Step 27

Now using the Type Tool (T) print whatsoever letter of the alphabet under the pencil. Select an interesting and wonderful font in the Character palette.

Go to Blazon > Create Outlines (Command + Shift + O), and change the Filling colour to dark-green. You lot should achieve the next result.

The letter should lie. Thus, go to Effect > 3D > Rotate.

Footstep 28

Swap Fill up and Stroke of the letter by pressing Shift + X.

Go to Object > Expand Appearance, then go to Object > Ungroup. You should achieve the following result.

Apply the "Pencil brush" now to the letter'south stroke, and decrease the Stroke Weight of it if necessary. See the movie beneath.

Conclusion

The final image is below. Employ the techniques you've learned hither in your ain artworks. I hope y'all've enjoyed this tutorial.
